This intensive human rights training program is specifically designed for individuals of African descent, residing in the diaspora, who are actively involved in advocating for the rights of people of African descent.

The program occurs once a year at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and offers participants the opportunity to:
– Deepen their understanding of international human rights law and the UN human rights system, particularly as it relates to combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance affecting people of African descent.
– Enhance skills in project proposal development, presentation delivery, and information submission to human rights mechanisms.
– Gain firsthand exposure to human rights mechanisms and engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
The primary purpose of the UN Human Rights Commission Fellowship Programme is to empower participants to contribute effectively to the promotion and protection of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of people of African descent in their respective countries. Participants will acquire the necessary tools to support the development of legislation, policies, and programs, foster collaboration between civil society and governments, and conduct local awareness-raising initiatives.
Requirements
– Applicants must be individuals of African descent residing in the diaspora.
– Applicants must have a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience related to the rights of people of African descent.
– Applicants must submit a letter from an organization working on issues related to people of African descent or minority rights, certifying their status.
– Applicants must be available to attend the full duration of the programme, which will take place from 11 November to 29 November 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland. Additionally, fellows are expected to dedicate time to pre-online courses and preparatory assignments in the two weeks preceding the programme.
Benefits
– Each fellow will receive a return ticket (economy class) from their country of residence to Geneva, basic health insurance, and a stipend to cover modest accommodation and living expenses for the duration of the programme.
Method of Application
– Applications can be submitted in English, French, or Spanish.
– Applicants are required to submit the following documents in one single email to ohchr-africandescentfellowship@un.org: Curriculum Vitae, completed and signed Application Form, Personal Statement (max. 500 words), Official Letter from the nominating organization or community certifying the status, and a copy of the applicant’s passport.
– Submissions with more than five attachments will not be accepted.
– In the subject header of the email, please mention: “Application for the 2024 Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent.” Name the attached documents following the format: LAST NAME First name – Type of document (e.g., SMITH Jacqueline – Application form.doc).
