This fellowship aims to support early to mid-career professionals from South Africa who exhibit leadership potential. The programme provides a fully funded one-year master’s degree at a higher education institution in Ireland, encompassing tuition fees, flights, accommodation, and living expenses.

Program Overview

The Ireland Fellows Programme is designed to empower emerging leaders by providing access to high-quality education in Ireland, thereby contributing to capacity building and the achievement of national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The fellowship nurtures future leaders, develops in-country capacity, and fosters positive relations with Ireland.

Kader Asmal Fellowship Specifics

This flagship program, offered by the Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, is targeted at early-career professionals who demonstrate leadership potential. Emphasizing the development of women’s leadership, particularly in STEM fields, the fellowship also prioritizes candidates from Universities of Historical Disadvantage and Universities of Technology who may not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in Ireland.

Eligible Courses

The fellowship supports a wide range of disciplines including agriculture, health, education, human rights, computer science, engineering, and business, among others. Detailed information about eligible courses is available in the Directory of Eligible Programmes.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Kader Asmal Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a resident and national of South Africa.
  • Have at least two years of substantial work experience directly related to their proposed study programme.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (First Class Honour, or Second Class Honour, Grade 1). Degrees awarded in 2012 or later are eligible.
  • Not hold or currently pursue a master’s level qualification or higher.
  • Be ready to commence a master’s programme in Ireland by August 2024.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, a commitment to achieving the SDGs in their home country, and a willingness to foster positive relationships with Ireland.
  • Select and identify three relevant programmes from the Directory of Eligible Programmes.
  • Meet the academic and English language proficiency requirements of the chosen programmes.
  • Have not applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme more than once previously.
  • Be available to commence the fellowship in the 2024/2025 academic year.
