Applications are now Open for the African Fact-Checking Awards 2024 with a $3,000 prize
The African Fact-Checking Awards, now in their eleventh year, celebrate outstanding fact-checking journalism across the continent.

Entries for the 2024 awards are open to journalists, journalism students, and professional fact-checkers from all African countries.
The awards feature three categories, each recognizing a winner and a runner-up:
1. Fact-Check of the Year by a Working Journalist
2. Fact-Check of the Year by a Professional Fact-Checker
3. Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist
Prizes
– Winners in the working journalist and professional fact-checker categories will receive US$3,000 each.
– Runners-up will be awarded $1,500 each.
– The winner of the student journalist category will receive $2,000, while the runner-up will get $1,000.
Eligibility
To qualify for the competition, entries must:
– Be the original work of the individual or team listed in the entry form as the author.
– Expose a claim on a significant topic relevant to Africa as misleading or incorrect.
– Be an original piece of fact-checking journalism first published or broadcasted between July 1, 2023, and July 14, 2024.
Criteria
Entries will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
1. Significance: The importance of the claim investigated to society as a whole and the potential consequences if left unchecked.
2. Testing: The thoroughness of examining the claim against available evidence, ensuring fairness to the claimant and strictness in assessing evidence.
3. Presentation: The clarity and accessibility of the report, making the topic understandable to the widest audience possible.
4. Impact: The effect of the fact-check on public discourse, including corrections made, reach, and sharing by other organizations or media members.
These criteria aim to recognize excellence in fact-checking that contributes to informed public debate and accountability across Africa.
