The African Graduate Fellowship is a competitive program aimed at bright and motivated African students looking to pursue a master’s degree at The American University in Cairo (AUC). This fellowship is available annually to African nationals (excluding Egyptians) for full-time graduate study, covering up to nine credits per semester or as required by the chosen program.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a non-Egyptian African national.
  • African nationals holding dual non-African citizenship are not eligible.
  • Open to all fields of graduate study.
  • New applicants must be admitted to one of AUC’s graduate programs and meet the university’s graduate admissions requirements.
  • Must submit an International TOEFL iBT or academic IELTS score according to AUC’s cut-off for graduate admissions.
  • Continuing students must maintain a GPA of 3.2 to retain the fellowship.
  • Financial need is considered.

Duration

The fellowship can last for up to five semesters and one intervening summer session, with a semester-by-semester review based on academic performance. For students in the Counseling Psychology program, the duration may be extended to seven semesters.

Fellowship Benefits

Recipients of the fellowship receive:

  • Tuition coverage for up to nine credits per semester.
  • A stipend.
  • Student services and activity fees.
  • Medical services and health insurance.
  • A monthly housing allowance or accommodation at the AUC New Cairo campus.
  • Potential coverage for remedial English language courses.

Responsibilities of Fellows

  • Fellows must complete 12 hours per week of academically related work.
  • Must maintain full-time student status.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required for continued eligibility.
  • Completion of Teaching Assistantship training is mandatory if involved in teaching duties. More details on teaching assistantships are available here.

Application Deadline: There are two fellowship application cycles for fall 2025:

  • Fellowship cycle 1 is from December 19, 2024 until January 16, 2025
  • Fellowship cycle 2 is from April 8, 2025, until May 8, 2025
