The AI for Science program at AIMS South Africa is an innovative, fully funded one-year Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences, focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications in cosmology, epidemiology, and ecology.

This program, in partnership with Google DeepMind, offers 40 fully funded scholarships per year to exceptional students from across Africa. Scholars will receive mentorship and technical support from Google DeepMind researchers and engineers, making this a unique opportunity to advance in the fields of AI and Science.

Focus Areas
This program applies AI and machine learning in:
- Cosmology – AI applications in astrophysics and space science.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the AI for Science Master’s Program 2025, applicants must:
- Be a resident of Africa at the time of application.
- Be a citizen of any African country.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree (4-year) or an Honours degree (3+1 year) by August 2025.
- For Southern African applicants: Completion by December 2025 is acceptable.
- Have a strong background in computational and mathematical fields, including:
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Statistics
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Meet the French LMD System Equivalent – M1 year in the French system qualifies.
- Not have previously received an AIMS scholarship.
Guidelines for Applications
Step 1: Register & Upload Documents
- Create an account on the AIMS South Africa Application Portal below
- Upload the required documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Academic background & research experience.
- Motivation Letter – 500-word statement on why you want to join the program.
- Academic Transcripts – Official university records.
Step 2: Complete Mathematics & Coding Challenges
- Mathematics Questions – Includes 12 short math problems.
- Coding Problem – Available on the application portal.
Tips: Ensure strong programming skills (Python or similar) before applying.
Step 3: Submit Your Application Before the Deadline
Ensure to submit applications before the final Deadline. Late applications will NOT be accepted.
Selection Process
- Application Review – Based on academic records, coding/math performance, and motivation letter.
- Interview Shortlisting – Selected applicants may be contacted for an interview.
- Final Selection & Notification – Successful applicants will be notified via email.
Note: All 40 selected scholars will start their Master’s program in September 2025.
