Applications are Now Open for the Africa Bitcoin Conference: TBD Hackathon 2024. Eligible individuals are encouraged to apply and stand a chance to win $20,000 in BTCs.
TBD, a part of Block, has launched the TBD Hackathon in partnership with the Africa Bitcoin Conference. This hackathon is designed to inspire innovation in payment systems across Africa using the tbDEX open-source protocol.

The competition will take place from July 31 to September 15, 2024, with the final event happening from December 9-11, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, during the Africa Bitcoin Conference.
Objectives
The TBD Hackathon aims to empower African developers and entrepreneurs by tackling key challenges in payment systems, including:
- Limited access to banking services
- High transaction fees
- Inefficient cross-border payments
Participants are expected to create a payment application using tbDEX that connects users with wallet providers and financial institutions, offering better exchange rates and lower fees.
Eligibility and Conduct
- Participants must be at least 18 years old.
- Participants must be residents of an African country.
- Participants must have a valid passport and/or visa to enter Nairobi, Kenya.
- Participants are expected to behave professionally and respectfully throughout the hackathon. Any form of harassment, discrimination, or inappropriate behavior will result in disqualification.
- Employees, contractors, and immediate family members of the Organizer are not eligible to participate.
- Participants must follow all applicable laws and rules of the contest. Any illegal activity or violation of the rules will lead to immediate disqualification.
Prizes
The six finalist teams will be flown to Nairobi to present their projects at the Africa Bitcoin Conference. The top three teams will receive the following prizes:
- First Prize: $15,000 in BTC
- Second Prize: $10,000 in BTC
- Third Prize: $5,000 in BTC
How to Participate
- Registration: Developers interested in participating can register for the hackathon HERE.
- Team Composition: Participants can form teams of up to two people.
- Development Environment: Teams will use the tbDEX SDK and have access to a sandbox environment with example Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) to test their applications.
Submission
To submit your project, follow these steps:
- Host your project in a public GitHub repository.
- Include a README.md file in your repository that provides an overview of your application and addresses the design considerations mentioned in the Instructions section.
- Complete the submission form with your project details and provide the link to your GitHub repository.
