The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has strongly refuted claims circulating in certain circles that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is causing delays in disbursing match bonuses and allowances owed to the Super Eagles participating in the ongoing 34th Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire.
Earlier, the NFF had announced securing an N12.5 billion approval from the federal government for the AFCON campaign, assuring players of a win bonus of $5,000, $2,500 for a draw, and a daily camp allowance of $200.

While some allowances have been settled, match-winning bonuses for games against Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon, and a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea are pending just three days before the crucial quarterfinal match against Angola.
An NFF official expressed concern that delays in the CBN releasing the funds might strain the trust-based relationship being fostered with the players.
However, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, dismissed the concerns, labeling them as baseless and commending the CBN for promptly processing payment requests.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Sanusi stated, “That is sheer idle talk without substance. The NFF is grateful to the CBN for the way and manner they have continued to expedite action on payment requests that we have sent to them with regards to this competition.”
Sanusi praised the CBN’s diligence and sense of duty, emphasizing that there have been no delays or complications in the payment process this time. He urged against spreading falsehoods about the institution.
Furthermore, Sanusi lauded the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, for his significant role in prioritizing the welfare of Nigerian footballers and athletes. He acknowledged the minister’s commitment to the overall development of Nigerian sports.
In adherence to a prior agreement with the NFF, the Super Eagles will receive a qualification bonus for reaching the knockout rounds, and the payment structure for match bonuses is tiered based on the team’s progress in the AFCON 2023/ AFCON 2024 tounament.
