The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has leveled new charges against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, alleging that he illegally printed Naira notes during his tenure and approved the withdrawal of billions from the consolidated revenue fund without proper authorization.
The anti-graft agency filed a four-count charge against Emefiele at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja. The charges accuse him of approving the printing of Naira notes without the required approvals and causing injury to the public.

Emefiele, who is already facing charges in both Abuja and Lagos, is expected to enter his plea before trial Justice Maryann Anenih.
The charges specify instances where Emefiele allegedly disobeyed the direction of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, by approving the printing of various denominations of Naira notes without the necessary recommendations and approvals. Additionally, he is accused of unlawfully approving the withdrawal of a significant sum from the Consolidated Revenue Fund.
Emefiele had been suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023 and was subsequently arrested at his Lagos residence by the Department of State Services (DSS). He was later transferred to EFCC custody and arraigned on earlier charges related to procurement fraud.
Despite being granted bail, Emefiele faced difficulties meeting the bail conditions and spent time in Kuje prison before eventually securing his release.
