The Department of Development Control, part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has given a 24-hour notice to the owners of 500 unauthorized markets and makeshift structures along the Karmo – Dei-Dei Road corridor in Abuja.
Mr. Garba Jibril, a Sector Monitor and Assistant Director in the department, announced this in a statement following an operation in Abuja on Monday.

Jibril explained that the Director of Development Control, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, held a meeting to inform stakeholders about the impending demolition.
He stated that removing the unauthorized structures is necessary because they disrupt traffic flow and cause congestion, especially on market days.
The team leader also mentioned that the FCTA has awarded a contract for the development of the Life Camp – Dei-Dei Road. However, traders along the road are obstructing the contractors from starting their work.
Jibril emphasized that the 24-hour notice must be taken seriously, and failure to comply will have consequences.
Regarding the relocation of traders, he stated that they have been directed to move to the officially designated Karmo Market, which is fully equipped. Despite efforts to encourage relocation, traders have been hesitant.
Meetings with stakeholders, including traditional leaders and market operators, have been held to facilitate relocation. After the demolition, it is hoped that traders will successfully relocate to the main market, maintaining a peaceful environment and ensuring smooth traffic flow.
In January, the Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS) initiated a similar demolition of unauthorized structures at various taxi ranks across Abuja. The operation aimed to create space for legitimate taxis and eliminate illegal taxi parks in the city.
