The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that underage boys involved in internet fraud, commonly known as Yahoo Yahoo, often falsify their age to obtain documents like driver’s licenses and open bank accounts.

Effa Okim, The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s zonal director for Edo, Delta, and Ondo states, made this revelation during a visit to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by Comrade Festus Alenkhe in Benin City. Okim also highlighted that Edo State ranks second to Lagos in terms of convictions for cybercrime despite its smaller size.
According to Okim, parents sometimes collude with authorities to falsify their children’s age, allowing them to engage in fraudulent activities. He emphasized that underage individuals should not be able to open bank accounts or obtain driver’s licenses legally.
Okim criticized the trend of parents claiming their children are underage when they are arrested for cybercrime, questioning their involvement in obtaining documents for their children.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is committed to partnering with the media to combat cybercrime and reduce its prevalence in society. In response, Comrade Festus Alenkhe encouraged Okim to maintain transparency and provide information to journalists to facilitate effective reporting.
