Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), in collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), has finalized plans to train one million girls in Nigeria in educational skills through UNICEF’s Girls’ Education Skills and Partnership (GESP) program.

This initiative targets adolescent girls and young women, equipping them with employable, entrepreneurial, and ICT skills.
Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, disclosed this during a five-day course design workshop on Girls Education Skills and Partnership (GESP), sponsored by UNICEF and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Over 60 participants attended the workshop held at the college PTDF/CITM Computer laboratory.
Abdul stressed the importance of the Girls’ Education Skills and Partnership project, emphasizing its aim to provide sustainable livelihood training, essential skills acquisition, and significant employment opportunities for girls.
He highlighted the significance of empowering girls with ICT skills, not only to address the gender gap but also to equip them with tools for a sustainable future. YABATECH is committed to providing students with the necessary skills to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Abdul noted that YABATECH is leading the way in tapping into the objectives of the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) by targeting 5,000 women for profitable skills acquisition.
This workshop marks the college’s first initiative strictly focused on empowering girls. Abdul emphasized the importance of providing women with a conducive atmosphere for acquiring skills, and expressing confidence in the college’s ability to ensure the success of the workshop.
The Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, represented by Mr. Ayo Aroge, the Director of NBTE Southwest Zonal Office, commended YABATECH for its commitment to skills development in Nigeria.
Bugaje highlighted the crucial role of initiatives like this in ensuring the quality of education for young people and sustaining competitiveness in the global economy. By investing in the skills development of girls, Yaba College of Technology is not only empowering them but also contributing to the overall development of society.
