Flights came to a halt at Port Harcourt International Airport due to a protest staged by women from the Ipo community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Clad in black attire, the protesters blocked the airport roundabout gate leading to the complex, brandishing placards with various messages, including ‘What is our offense?’, ‘Over Seven Years of No NEPA Light,’ ‘No single access to the mobile network,’ ‘No good access roads within Ipo community,’ among others.

The enraged women barricaded the Port Harcourt airport on March 27, 2024.
This disruption caused flights within the airport to be halted for approximately two to three hours.
According to an insider at the airport, “While arrivals remained unaffected, departures were hindered as passengers were unable to enter the airport premises. The disruption persisted until around 8 am when the gates were eventually opened.”
Amid the chaos, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of traditional rulers, Sergeant Awuse, addressed the women and pledged to personally visit with the airport management team to address the issues affecting their community.
He also requested the airport manager to assemble a team comprising members of the airport management to accompany him to the community on Friday.
Following these assurances, the protesting women retreated and unblocked the gates to the airport.
