The Federal Government (FG) has initiated the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway along with the maintenance of crucial bridges in Lagos.
During the official handover of the first phase of the project, Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, emphasized that the government would not tolerate variations resulting from delays or slow progress once mobilization had been completed.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway spans nine states, featuring two spurs leading to the Northern States. The first phase, covering 47.47 kilometers of dual carriageway constructed in concrete pavement, has been entrusted to Hitech Construction Company Ltd, as stated by Barr. Orji Uchenna, the Special Adviser, Media to the Minister.
Minister Umahi, accompanied by Engr. (Mrs) O. I. Kesha, the Federal Ministry of Works’ Controller for Lagos State, underscored the importance of timely project delivery for all contractors handling Federal Government road projects. He commended Hitech Construction Company Nigeria Ltd for its reputation in delivering quality and swift projects.
The Minister visited various project sites, including Queen’s Drive Ikoyi, the top deck of the Third Mainland Bridge, Eddo Bridge, Eko Bridge, and Carter Bridge.
He expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to comprehensive rehabilitation of these critical bridges, covering not only the top but also the substructure.
Regarding the Third Mainland Bridge, Minister Umahi outlined the rehabilitation plans, including asphalt milling, reasphalting, installation of guardrails, replacement of lights with solar lights, addition of decorative lights, and the installation of CCTV cameras to enhance security.
The rehabilitation efforts also involve addressing deflections in some sections of the bridge’s slab. An expert will assess and reinstate the tendons of the slab, with previous successful examples at Eko Bridge by Buildwell. The minister assured that there is no cause for concern regarding this aspect of the project.
Representatives from various construction companies pledged to align with the spirit of excellence represented by the Renewed Hope administration of President Bola Tinubu.
