Unless there is a last-minute intervention by the state government, both academic and non-academic activities at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) are set to come to a halt starting from Monday, March 11, 2024
This decision stems from a resolution reached by a coalition of workers’ unions within the institution, operating under the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

In a communique issued after their emergency meeting, the leaders of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), represented by Comrade Mefiok Umanah; the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), represented by Comrade Emmanuel Okon; and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATs), directed all workers to participate in a sit-at-home protest starting from Monday.
The leaders explained that it became necessary to resume the industrial action, which was temporarily suspended a few weeks ago due to government intervention.
The government had given assurances that key issues related to workers’ welfare and the enhancement of teaching and learning infrastructure in the school would be addressed.
As a result, the leaders directed the closure of both campuses, including the main campus at Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin local government area and Obio Akpa in Abak LGA, until the agreement reached with Governor Umo Eno to implement their demands is fulfilled.
They highlighted that Governor Umo Eno had intervened on February 7, 2024, approving the payment of the 2023 leave grant, the 2023 13th-month salary, and the payment of 2023 palliatives. Additionally, the governor approved the constitution of the Governing Council, which was the contentious issue at the time.
