In a proactive effort to address the urgent food crisis affecting over 1.3 million people in northeast Nigeria, Ukraine has generously contributed 25,000 tons of wheat to the nation.
This initiative significantly strengthens the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) response in the region, especially amidst inflation and spikes in food prices.

The donation is a part of Ukraine’s humanitarian initiative, “Grain from Ukraine,” launched by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Rising staple food prices in Nigeria have rendered basic meals unaffordable for millions of vulnerable families nationwide. The collaborative effort of the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, Republic of Korea, and Sweden has facilitated the transportation of the wheat from Ukraine to Nigeria and its distribution to families in urgent need.
David Stevenson, the WFP representative and Country Director in Nigeria, expressed gratitude, stating, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Government of Ukraine, partners, and donors for their unwavering support through the Grain from Ukraine Initiative. This collaborative effort plays a crucial role in alleviating suffering and maintaining human dignity in areas facing conflict and food price increase.”
Stevenson emphasized that while WFP has the tools and willingness to support the government in revitalizing the agricultural potential of northeast Nigeria, collective action is necessary to bring peace, stability, and address challenges such as unstable markets, financial investments, and employment generation through enhanced collaboration with Nigerian private sector partners.
As a part of WFP’s ongoing humanitarian operations, the wheat donation will be combined with cash and other commodities to meet the basic food and nutrition needs of crisis-affected individuals for a two-month period.
Cynthia Rowe, the British High Commission Development Director, emphasized the importance of helping vulnerable populations globally, expressing the UK’s pride in supporting WFP to distribute lifesaving grain across Nigeria. She noted that this contribution would address rising food insecurity driven by conflict and regional instability.
The persistent deadly conflicts and violence in northeast Nigeria have displaced millions, disrupting agriculture and livelihoods production. WFP remains committed to working with the government and partners to build resilient, inclusive, and effective food systems, focusing on emergency food assistance for vulnerable groups and supporting self-reliance for long-term food security and resilience.
