IBEDC, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, has severed the power supply to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, due to outstanding electricity debt exceeding N400 million.
Investigations revealed that the disconnection occurred a few days ago, as UCH Ibadan failed to settle its accrued debts.

Angela Olanrewaju, Chief Corporate Services Officer at IBEDC, confirmed the disconnection, emphasizing the challenging decision was necessitated by the hospital’s mounting debt, which had surpassed N400 million.
Despite recognizing the essential services provided by the hospital, IBEDC asserted that repeated attempts, including written communications, meetings, and notices, had failed to yield results. The disconnection aimed at recovering the debt to maintain efficient service delivery to other customers.
Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, declined to comment on the situation. However, another source indicated that UCH has initiated negotiations to address the issue and restore the power supply to the hospital.
A hospital insider disclosed that the disconnection has severely impacted UCH’s operations, particularly as the inverter, their alternative power source, is insufficient for intensive medical treatments.
Numerous planned operations have been canceled or rescheduled, and critical departments such as Radiology and the mortuary are anticipated to experience severe disruptions, potentially compromising patient care and safety.
