Reports indicate that the assailants, disguised as residents, stopped at a nearby market, purchased food items, and subsequently launched an attack on the people.

The incident led to a chaotic scene, with numerous individuals, including traders and school children, seeking refuge.

An eyewitness employed in Abakiliki confirmed the occurrence, recounting a narrow escape from becoming a victim.

“The unknown gunmen initially halted at a well-known filling station in Iboko, refueled their vehicles, and then killed two individuals there.

They proceeded to the location of the Neighbourhood Vigilante members, where they opened fire, resulting in the death of Fredrick Idike and another person. Two vigilante members were also attacked with an axe, and their bodies have been taken to the nearest morgue.”

“Yesterday was market day at Iboko, and the unfortunate incident prompted traders to flee for safety. The entire market was deserted due to the distressing occurrence.”

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ukandu Joshua, stated, “Yes, it happened. Two lives were lost. But we are still investigating.”
