On Monday evening, a tragic incident occurred at Havarde College of Science, Business, and Management Studies in Obada-Oko, Abeokuta Ogun state, where a 300-level student named Ajoke, studying Basic Medical Science, reportedly took her own life.
It is believed that she ingested a poisonous substance, suspected to be a sniper. Her lifeless body, which is suspected to be pregnant, was discovered in her off-campus hostel room.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Ajoke, in a state of depression, ended her life upon learning that the nursing course she had been studying for three years at the institution failed to meet accreditation requirements from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. This accreditation failure meant that she would not receive certification for the nursing program.
A source close to the deceased shared that her depression intensified when she discovered she was pregnant, adding another layer of difficulty as she could not obtain a certificate for the course she had invested years into.
In response to the lack of accreditation, the Ogun government took action by sealing the Nursing Department of the institution. An enforcement team from the State Ministry of Health, along with members of the State Nursing and Midwifery Committee (SNMC), conducted the operation.
Dr. Kayode Oladehinde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, emphasized the dangers of unaccredited nursing programs, contributing to quackery in the profession. He stated that the Department would remain closed until fully accredited.
Dr. Oladehinde urged parents and prospective students to be cautious of institutions making false claims and advised checking the NMCN website for an updated list of accredited institutions. The government, he assured, would continue efforts to curb quackery in the nursing profession.
