Discussing the potential causes of the deaths during the football match between Nigeria and South Africa, consultant cardiologist Dr. Salau Ibrahim highlighted the possibilities of stroke, sudden heart attack, or stress-induced heart problems leading to sudden collapses.
Dr. Salau emphasized the significance of age, particularly for older individuals with underlying health issues, urging caution regarding activities that stress organs, especially the heart.
He specifically cautioned against anxiety and stress, identifying anxiety as a form of emotional stress. The major causes of sudden deaths, according to Dr. Salau, are stroke or heart attack, often related to underlying conditions such as hypertension or diabetes.
While acknowledging that individuals with hypertension can watch football, Dr. Salau stressed the importance of regulating blood pressure and taking medication regularly. He advised against watching football in crowded settings that could increase pressure.
Another consultant cardiologist, Dr. Ramon Moronkola, linked the possible causes of death during the football match to stroke resulting from cardiac arrest and heart or brain issues.
He explained how emotional surges during intense moments, like a football match, could lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure, potentially causing cardiac arrest or heart attack in individuals with underlying cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Moronkola urged Nigerians to undergo regular heart checks, emphasizing the importance of early detection and treatment of heart conditions. He also recommended controlling emotions, especially during intense events like football matches, for individuals with known heart issues.
Dr. Chira Obiora, a consultant family physician, reiterated the importance of knowing one’s health challenges before engaging in activities that could stimulate health issues.
He explained how excitement releases adrenaline, which can narrow blood vessels and increase blood pressure, potentially triggering cardiovascular problems. Dr. Obiora advised individuals to undergo regular medical checkups, manage their blood pressure, and maintain a positive outlook to avoid unnecessary tension.
The experts collectively underscored the need for early detection, proper management of underlying health conditions, and maintaining a calm disposition, especially during events that could evoke strong emotions.
