The Federal Government is set to initiate the Cervical Cancer second phase of vaccination against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in May 2024, targeting 21 states.
Dr. Muyi Aina, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja.

The first phase of the HPV vaccination was launched in October 2023, aiming to vaccinate 7.7 million girls aged 9 to 14 in 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The 21 states included in the second phase of the vaccination are Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara.
Dr. Muyi highlighted that the introduction of the HPV vaccine was a significant step toward expanding the range of vaccines freely available to Nigerians. He stated, “Later this year, actually by May, we will be rolling out the second phase to states.”
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare services, Dr. Muyi outlined a strategy focused on enhancing primary healthcare services across the country.
The plan includes making health facilities fully functional over the next four years, ensuring they have the necessary resources, workforce, commodities, and technical assistance to deliver quality services. The decentralization of facility financing is also part of this comprehensive approach.
