During an unscheduled inspection visit to the project site on January 27, 2024, Minister Umahi observed infractions in the construction specifications, leading to the suspension of work on the 15km Eleme to Onne Junction section of the East-West Road.
Following a meeting on January 29, 2024, with the permanent secretary and key directors of the Ministry of Works along with RCC Ltd management, the minister directed the contractor to immediately resume work on the project.
The suspension was initially imposed due to substandard work, and the contractor was invited to the ministry to address technical issues.
The directive includes resuming work on the four sections of the project in strict compliance with contract specifications.
The contractor is also instructed to engage with representatives of host communities to address concerns about alleged infringement on the contractor’s right of way, which was reported to slow down the project.
