Nigerians are leaving twitter to join Truth Social. This is a microblogging app founded by ex-U.S. President Donald Trump. This came to limelight after Twitter announced restrictions on the number of tweets users can read on the platform in a day. Although Twitter has rescinded the policy, many Nigerians have continued to migrate to Truth Social as an alternative.

Truth Social was founded by Trump after he was permanently ba*ned from Twitter. This is due to an allegation that he inc*ted the ri*ters who att*cked the U.S. Capitol building in January 2021. Until Twitter announced restrictions on the number of tweets users can read in a day, Truth Social was not very popular among Nigerians. But after Twitter users started having difficulty logging into the app because of the restrictions placed on the platform, Truth Social became famous.

Similarly, Bluesky Social, a new micro-blogging platform by ex-Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is also gaining popularity among Nigerians. Millions of people are joining the waitlist to use the new social media platform, which is an alternative to Twitter.
The rush to join these alternative social media platforms comes after the Nigerian government announced an indefinite ban on Twitter, claiming that its actions in the country were “capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”. As of today, millions of citizens can only access the social media platform through VPNs.

Consequently, the ban on Twitter has been criticized as another step back to dictatorship in Nigeria. Social media in the country is not just about political expression but also about promoting businesses, selling wares, expressing personal social or religious opinions, reading and sharing news, making friends, finding mates, advocating for causes, and sharing news often not covered by mainstream media.
It remains to be seen how popular Truth Social and Bluesky Social will become in Nigeria. Their rise in popularity among Nigerians shows that there is a demand for alternative social media platforms in the country.
