Federal Govt (FG), President Bola Tinubu convened a National Security Council meeting at the State House in Abuja yesterday to address the ongoing nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance, which have now entered their fifth day.
The meeting focused on security threats, including the recent trend of protesters in northern states raising Russian flags.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, briefed State House correspondents after the meeting, describing the raising of Russian flags in Nigerian cities as a treason attempt. He assured that those responsible would face legal consequences. The CDS also dismissed any possibility of a coup, emphasizing that the military is committed to defending Nigeria’s democracy.
General Musa stated that while the protests initially began peacefully, they have since been exploited by criminals, leading to looting and other illegal activities. He warned that the government would not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the nation’s peace and stability, including the display of foreign flags, which he deemed a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Addressing rumors of military involvement in looting, General Musa clarified that the allegations were a misconception. He stated that investigations conducted by the military had found no evidence of soldiers participating in such activities. He reiterated that the military remains ready to intervene if the protests escalate beyond control.
The meeting was attended by key government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. Also present were the heads of various security and law enforcement agencies, including the service chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and the Directors-General of the DSS and NIA.
